July 2023 Alumni Update

Posted on July 18, 2023 by Coach Hasenstein
Cross Country season is quickly approaching...Official practice starts Monday, August 7th. But, before we move on to the CC season let's wrap up what our alums accomplished this past year in the college ranks and beyond. (Please feel free to add anything I've missed).

Justin Metzler has qualified for the World Championships in the Triathlon by placing 3rd at the Ironman Coeur d"Alene event...Good Luck, Justin! https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-news/elite/ironman-coeur-d-alene-2023-results-report

Jack Whetstone visited the team last week (thanks, Jack) and also recently completed his final season at Syracuse. Jack had an excellent career running PR's of 29:50 (10k) and 14:22 (5k) and also earned D3 All-American Honors in Cross Country while attending Emory for his undergrad work.

Dimitri Manesiotis (South Alabama) placed 7th in the Hammer Throw at the Sun Belt Conference Championships this spring with a PR of 186-3. Dimitri's Shot Put PR stands at 51-1. Great tosses with the 16 lbs. weights!

Ryan Faut (South Alabama) followed his former teammate to South Alabama and is also following him in the Hammer Throw. Ryan Placed 8th at the Sun Belt meet just behind Dimitri at 181-10. Ryan's Discus PR is 151-6.

Will Houser (Wash U/St. Louis) qualified for the D3 Nationals for the 3rd year in a row placing 12th overall with a time of 1:50.32.

Will Kelly (St. Olaf) as qualified for the D3 National Meet in the Steeplechase. Will placed 10th overall and broke the St. Olaf school record with a time of 8:53.30 during the prelims! Congrats, Will!

Nathan Shapiro (MIT) Qualified for D3 Indoor National Meet in the Long Jump and scored in many Invites during the outdoor season. MIT won the D3 Outdoor Team Title after finishing 2nd at the Indoor D3 Championships. Twin, Noah (Wash U/St. Louis), battled injuries this season and hopes to back on the track next season for his team.

Brian Hiltebrand (Creighton) concentrated on the 1500 Meter Run this year and ran a PR of 3:57.69 (converts to a 4:14 mile). Brian also ran a leg on a 2nd place Distance Medley Relay at the Kansas Relays!

Elie Nassif (Univ. of Florida). Elie hoped to compete in college but U of FL does not offer the Pole Vault. Elie wanted to stay connected to the sport so he became a volunteer pole vault coach at a local high school...Very cool!

Last but not least...Terry Webb (class of 1967/First GBS All-State Track Athlete) stopped by school this summer to meet current State Champion, Ryan Schaefer. Ryan erased Terry's long standing school record in the High Jump this past season...Thanks, Terry, for sharing so many great stories about GBS and our track program. See Jon Cohn's article for more details on this fun meet up! https://www.dailyherald.com/sports/20230712/coach-meet-glenbrook-souths-longest-standing-record-holder-and-the-track-champion-who-broke-it

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
